There are about 1,000 species of ant lion; all larvae, and many adults, are carnivorous, feeding on insects and spiders. Eggs are laid singly in sand or dry soil. Larvae of the genus Myrmeleon live in funnel-shaped sandy pits, with their strong, toothed jaws ready to trap any insect that stumbles in.
